Choosing the right Conservatory Style

The subject of conservatories and pool enclosures is a popular one in many neighborhoods. Adding such things to your home doesn’t just affect you; it can impact the neighboring homes as well. Choosing the right style for your house and lifestyle is very important and there are many to choose from. The style of the home, space, budget and building materials should all factor in when building a conservatory or pool enclosure.

Victorian Conservatories

One of the most popular styles is the Victorian style conservatory(see Conservatory History for background information). Known for its curved lines, angled bases, stained glass and pitched roof, this style of conservatory can be seen on many homes. Leaded glass and detailed embellishments on the rooflines are also part of the Victorian style. Due to great variations, no two ever look alike. These can be done large or small, but they definitely look best on “period” homes, or non-modern looking homes.

Edwardian Conservatories

Edwardian style conservatories also have pitched roofs, but the bases are generally square. Straight lines are commonly used in this style and so Edwardian conservatories can go well with modern homes or an older style house. Sizes vary greatly in this style as well. More information about the history of Edwardian Conservatories can be found in our history section

Mediterranean Conservatories

Conservatories done in the Mediterranean style are usually also done in clean, simple straight lines. The roof is usually flat. This style works best when space is limited, so it works well with smaller houses of almost any style or in smaller yard spaces.

Gull Wing Conservatories & Pool Enclosures

Gull wing conservatories are used in expansive areas and can be a rather large project. They can be built to go from one side of a house to the other. The roof is slightly pitched and fans out from the center, hence the name. These work well as pool enclosures, just because of their sheer size.

Conservatories can be built in many different styles. They can be made from all types of building supplies, including aluminum, wood or brick. Glass ceilings are the norm, but other types of roofing can be used as well. As always, attention to detail and well-made plans are the best way to get the conservatory of your dreams, in whatever style that you want and within the budget you have in mind.
